Introduction

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (1875–1950), popularly known as the Iron Man of India, was one of the foremost leaders of India’s independence movement and the country’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister. He is remembered for his pivotal role in integrating over 560 princely states into independent India, laying the foundation of a united nation.

Early Life and Education

• Born: October 31, 1875, in Nadiad, Gujarat.
• Parents: Jhaverbhai Patel (father) and Ladbai (mother).
• Studied law in England at the Middle Temple Inn, London, and became a successful barrister upon returning to India.
• Deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi, Patel joined the Indian freedom movement, leaving behind his flourishing law career.

Role in India’s Freedom Struggle

• Played a key role in the Non-Cooperation Movement (1920–22) and the Civil Disobedience Movement.
• Gained recognition as a strong leader during the Bardoli Satyagraha (1928), where he successfully led farmers’ protests against unfair taxation. This earned him the title “Sardar” (leader).
• Imprisoned multiple times during the struggle for independence but continued to be a pillar of the Indian National Congress.

Role in Independent India

• After independence in 1947, Patel became the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of India.
• Instrumental in the integration of princely states, convincing rulers to accede to India. Over 560 princely states were merged, preventing possible Balkanization of the country.
